I have desperately tried not to publicize my views on the Chick-Fil-A debacle playing out in society today.
Yesterday was "Kiss In" day a the fast food chain, where only if you are a social media hermit, you did not know that people who claim they wanted to exercise their First Amendment rights of Free Speech and Freedom or Religion touted about in support of Chick-Fil-A's Christian based stance on homosexuality. But on the flip side people who wanted to exercise their inalienable rights avoided the restaurant like the people inside had leprosy.
Firstly, anyone who reads my blog know that religion and politics are something that I don't collide. It is an everyday blog about family, friends and the trials and tribulations of raising children in a consumerist based society. With that being said, I find the chicken sandwich debate amongst some of the most interesting things and that the thoughts/comments of "my friends" on Facebook have touted, since everyday life impedes on what I will and won't teach my children.
I have gay friends, I have straight friends. I have gay family members and I have straight ones. Do they love me or my children any differently? No. Do we as a family love them any differently? No. Do my children understand what being a homosexual is? Entirely, No but do they know that so and so live with so and so and love each other like mommy and daddy do? Yes.
Why have we taught our children this "normalcy"? Well for thousands of years, yes thousands, not just the last 20, homosexuals and straight people have lived together. So yes, anthropologically being a homosexual is normal no matter which version of a book you want to throw at some one. Is love love? yes.
So my virulently christian friends tout that they are just exercising their First Amendment rights, and well if going to get yourself a chicken sandwich makes you feel like you are exercising your rights as that fast food slides down your throat...go right ahead.
My gay friends and my pro-love friends think that their unalienable rights are being discriminated against because Chick-Fil-A out right states their christian beliefs that homosexuality is morally wrong, so they are in protest of letting that chicken sandwich even touch one single solitary taste bud.
So how does this debacle collide with the principles of my family blog? It's not about a chicken sandwich. It's about teaching, learning and growing as a parent. Raising capable children in a consumerist society to think for themselves no matter what one friend is touting. Making sure that they understand that it is important to share your voice and stand up when they wholeheartedly believe that they are being mistreated. So if my mini-humans were older than they are, this current event would be the perfect platform to teach them tolerance. Tolerance for the views of some that are or not shared by the many. But they are mini-humans, that at their age believe that they are loved and respected by those around them, and that those around them are deserving of their love and respect in return.
